Apatment Building Renovation
Dalagatan, Stockholm
2022-24
Built
Wasahof

For several years, Blank has had the privilege of working with the family that owns the property on Dalagatan, located next to Vasaparken in Stockholm. The beautiful 1890s building consists of 18 rental apartments as well as two classic Stockholm restaurants, Musslan and Wasahof. Our involvement in the project has been extensive and included the renovation and upgrade of various parts of the building, including the rental apartments, the stairwell, and minor additions to the restaurants and banquet hall, which are also operated by the owner’s family.

Our main task has been the careful, full renovation of the worn rental apartments, which included replacing all plumbing and electrical systems, as well as installing new bathrooms and kitchens. We also worked on restoring the over 100-year-old oak floors, which provide a beautiful foundation for the apartments. The focus has been on creating robust and functional environments in harmony with the building’s original character.

The most visually striking intervention in the project has been the new patterned and colored tiled floors—a tribute to the 19th-century tile patterns in the existing stairwell.

In parallel with this work, we’ve also had the honor of working on the iconic apartment where Astrid Lindgren lived and worked for most of her life, situated between the rental apartments and the restaurants. We have aimed to recreate original details from the apartment, such as sourcing woven wallpaper similar to what was put up in the 1980s, and restoring a 1940s bathroom that had long since been demolished. Among the demolition debris, we discovered old ceramic tiles, which we managed to replicate and use to produce new tiles in the original turquoise color.
