Blank, together with interior architects Navet, has developed a flexible yet character-rich theater for the experimental theater group Konträr.
The theater is housed in a space on Östgötagatan in Stockholm, originally built as a cinema and most recently used as a restaurant.
Konträr challenges conventional ideas of how theater should be staged, and a high degree of flexibility in how the performance space could be used was a fundamental starting point. Foldable bleachers, a large lighting rig enabling a wide range of lighting scenarios, and the absence of a raised stage allow for many types of performances and varied relationships between actors and audience.
In contrast to the black, minimalist performance space, the foyer and staff areas are rich in color—seen in flooring, walls, textiles, and furnishings. The lighting was custom-designed in collaboration with a lighting artist.
