One of society’s most important tasks is to secure access to fresh water for its citizens. Through a dignified and playful form, Dyningen manifests this vital mission. It is a robust building in reinforced concrete that will meet the fresh water needs of the people of Värmdö for many years. The sculptural, undulating shape appears different depending on where and when it is viewed. The alternating convex and concave surfaces create an exciting play of shadows as the sun moves across the sky, offering a clear point of orientation in the landscape. A friendly and lively landmark in Hemmesta.

Our goal was to develop a project that sensitively connects to the beautiful archipelago nature and, through a natural meeting with the landscape, avoids blasting and large-scale excavation. By utilizing previously disturbed land as much as possible, we preserve the majority of the site’s beautiful rock outcrops.

To minimize foundation work, we sought a design for the water tower that rests on only a few points. The water tower consists of a cistern volume supported by three large columns. The cistern is formed by six circular segments inscribed in an equilateral triangle. The rounded corners seamlessly transition into the columns, forming a cohesive whole.

The water tower is made of cast-in-place concrete with elements of corten steel, materials chosen for their long durability and low maintenance needs. These materials blend well into the site’s colour palette, where the granite slabs and the trunks of the pines set the tone.
