Blank has designed Nybohov Studios, a residential tower that complements the iconic 1960s architecture in Nybohov in southern Stockholm.

In the late 1950s, Bertil Ringqvist, commissioned by Svenska Bostäder, planned a new residential area on Nybohovsberget above Lake Trekanten in Stockholm. The district was built between 1959 and 1964 and is characterized by a monumental scale and a distinctly sculptural expression, typical of the period between the smaller-scale neighborhood planning of the 1950s and the Million Program of the 60s and 70s.

The district resembles an isolated mountain village, growing out of the greenery on the hill. It is made up of three slab-like buildings, 11 towers, a school facility, and a water reservoir. The architecture is characterized by clearly articulated, visually reduced volumes in unpigmented plaster, placed in an open, green, terraced landscape built with rough in situ concrete retaining walls.

Our proposal, Nybohov Studios, is an addition to the existing structure where a compact tower is placed on a base containing car parking. The building is positioned with amazing views of Stockholm at the edge of the forest that grows on the slope down to the lake.

The building houses 36 apartments, mostly small studios and one-bedroom units. The base is embedded in the sloping landscape, allowing the roof to function as an entrance area and courtyard for the residents. A cross-plan with four apartments per floor and balconies in the corners shapes the floor plans. The orientation of the balconies creates shifts in the otherwise strict facade structure, giving the different facades unique expressions.
